RAINBOW CAFE SHENZHEN
Rainbow Cafe is something of a Shenzhen institution. This is a chain of western restaurants. It’s not the best western food you’ll ever eat; nor is it the worst. But, it’s an experience.
To understand the experience you have to understand some of the things Chinese think about western food. To the Chinese western dining is above all romantic. When you’re
eating normally you get together with as many people as possible and make an enormous noise. But when you’re eating alone with that special someone you can’t go past a western meal that is to be savoured very slowly, one to one with a silly look on your face.
So Rainbow Cafe is above all romantic. It’s heavily decorated in wafting translucent silk with indirect lighting and candles and, of course, wine. It’s surprisingly pleasant. The menu is enormous in every sense. We suggest that you take a course of weight lifting before you attempt to pick it up. And service is relentlessly discreet and friendly. You can find them all over town and we recommend that you do at least once.
AJISEN RAMEN
This is good cheap reliable Japanese food and it’s everywhere. Look out for the red logo in just about any big shopping centre
LAUREL RESTAURANTS
Simply the best Cantonese food. We rave about their dim sum in various places particularly Portofino and Luohu Commercial Centre
