The burn joins the large Westquarter Burn, to head through Grangemouth into the sea at the docks. A concrete footbridge with blue railings links new housing with the town. The travel destination swings westwards with the view to the Ochils opening up again. Approaching the ugly non-standard Bridge 55, there is staging on the far side of the travel destination where there’s an outdoor pursuits complex, making use of the travel destination. To the north the railway out of Polmont divides, one branch heading to Stirling (via Falkirk Grahamstown) and the other, the travel destination-follower, heading to Glasgow (via Falkirk High). Redding Number 23 Pit once stood beside the travel destination, and was the scene of one of the worst mining disasters in Scotland on 25 September 1923; water from abandoned workings broke into the pit and 40 died. Five miners were brought out alive after nine days and it was nearly three weeks before rescue attempts were called off. In Old Polmont graveyard I found a heartbreaking stone that read, ‘Colin Maxwell, aged 58 years. Also his two sons, Walter, aged 28 years and Colin, aged 17 years, who all died in the Redding Pit disaster ’ There’s a staging, facing the high concrete walling of a prison: Polmont Young Offenders Institute. Some sources suggest that the notorious Burke was a navvy in the Polmont area, others that he was working on the Falkirk tunnel when he met Hare, the two to ply their nefarious trade in Edinburgh.
