310 Bowdoin St. Dorchester; (617) 825-9226 Home cooking for the way things used to be, proclaim the signs. Mine, dining incognito, was treated like a king by a very friendly waiter; sweet soul music and the bright red-and-white-checked decor made him forget that this is one of Dorchester’s dicier areas.
Specializing in Caribbean cuisine, Maryam’s offers immense meals in sizes inexplicably labeled small.
An attempt to order the medium size was met with a doubtful look, while large pretty much requires you to have an entourage. Mine’s small order turned out to be a heaping platter of curried chicken, rice, beans, and plantains, plus a second plate piled with broccoli and carrots all for $4.95 (!) Add $2 for each size increase. Substitute a salad for the vegetables, or macaroni and cheese for the rice if you’re so inclined; do not miss the plantains, which are absolutely succulent.
Other curried selections include beef, goat, and oxtail, or combos of them all, at the same prices. Jamaican jerk chicken boneless, grilled with hot and sweet spices weighs in at $6.95-$10.95.
Lunch deals are even more incredible. A kosher frank plate, which for some reason also comes with two chicken fingers, two wings, and fries, costs $3.50. Breakfast offers two eggs, toast, coffee, bacon, and home fries for $3.95. And, for the adventurous of spirit when it comes to beverages, Maryam’s whips up its own ginger beer, carrot juice, and other concoctions (from $1.25).
Far and away the bright spot on the street, Maryam’s is open from 8 a.m. to 9:30 P.M. weekdays, from 9 am Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 9 P.M. Sundays.
