Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The Avery Brundage Collection Photo Gallery
The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. Opened in 1966 as a result of a gift to the City of San Francisco by industrialist Aver Brundage. the Museums holdings include more than 12,000 art objects spanning more than 6,000 years and representing more than 40 nations throughout Asia. On exhibit are examples of Chinese, Japanese, Indian. Korean, Himalayan, Southeast Asian and Islamic art. The Museum regularly organizes major exhibitions, and frequently presents educational programs relating to Asian arts and culture. Nearly one-half of the Museum’s holdings are of Chinese origin and include extensive collections of paintings, bronzes, and sculptures, dating from the early Neolithic period to the 20th century The founding Avery Brundage Collection represents approximately 65% of the holdings of the Museum and consists of almost 7,800 objects, including more than 1,500 jade artifacts. As a result of a bond measure approved by San Francisco voters in 1994, the Museum is scheduled to relocate from its current location in Golden Gate Park to the Old Main Library building at. Civic Center m 2002.

After several years of exhibiting in other local museums and corporate exhibit spaces, the Museum constructed its own site with the aid of an endowment from Charles M. Schulz, creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. The Cartoon Art Museum is dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and exhibition ol cartoon art in all its forms. In addition to seven major exhibitions a year, the Museum organizes traveling exhibitions and other exhibit-related activities such as artist-in-residence lecture series and outreach activities. Facilities include a classroom for cartoon art, a blogstore, and a research library. The permanent collection includes approximately 11.000 original works.
