The ship went through one or two fog patches and the second mate decided to call the master at 0500 hrs on 29 February, but a moment later he noticed something on the port bow that looked like foam. He went to get his binoculars and was returning to the controls when he heard the distinct sound of breakers. There was nothing he could do because, before he could get to the telegraph to stop her, the Yewglen ground up onto the reef with her bows high and dry. The master took command and attempted to pull the ship off with her own power and then with the help of a tug, all to no avail. Seahouses lifeboat came alongside and a breeches buoy was rigged up, but neither was needed, because the crew literally walked along the reef top to safety. The ship stood on the reef for about six weeks, sometimes almost high and dry, while the insurance company and salvage people argued about money, until one day she broke her back and had to be partly salvaged where she stood. At the court of inquiry the master was found guilty of negligence along with the first and second mate (the latter was very inexperienced) and the master also had to pay the nominal sum of £100 towards the costs of the court. Reef diving between beadnell and Seahouses The rocky shoreline at low tide between Beadnell and Seahouses provides some excellent dive sites with some first-class reefs at almost every access point to the sea: Lady Hole, just before Beadnell Point; Nacker Hole at the fork in the road leading to the car park; down over the rocky bit ofheadland, close to and behind the fishermen’s huts, while in front of the camping site there are a few separate little sandy bays between the rocks from which to swim out, leading to a number of different reefs. From Seahouses, below the golf course, there are numerous reefs leading out and away from the shore all along this stretch of coast, right up to Seahouses harbour. To the seaward side of the harbour wall there is a nice rocky cove with lovely high reefs sheltered from the tide and good, easy access.
