PUBS

With approximately 650 pubs and 70,000 people, Galway maintains an extremely low person to pub ratio. Indeed, the city’s intricate constellation of pubs is its number one attraction. In general, Quay St. and Eyre Sq. cater more to tourists, while locals stick to the more trad-oriented Dominick Street pubs.

HThe King’s Head, on High St. has 3 floors and a huge stage devoted to nightly rock.

Upstairs music varies, from trad to rock cover bands. Su jazz brunch l-3pm; ‚12.

Roisin Dubh (The Black Rose), Dominick St. An intimate, bookshelved front hides Galway’s hottest live music scene. In general, rock artists and singer-songwriters play their stage, but folk and blues musicians put in appearances too. Cover ‚5-20.

The Hole in the Wall, Eyre Sq. This surprisingly large pub fills up fast with college-age singletons year-round. An ideal place to meet people, offering booths for groups, 3 bars for mingling, and tables to dance on. Music varies, but craic is a constant.

The Crane, 2 Sea Rd. is a friendly, musical pub that is one of the best places to hear trad in Galway. The 2nd floor hosts live performances that get better and better as musi-cians filter in throughout the night to join in the jam. Trad every night and all day Su. Set dancing Tu.

CLUBS

Between midnight and 12:30am, the pubs drain out and the tireless go dancing. The place to be rotates nightly. The best way to find the hot spot for the night is simply to follow the crowd after last call.

Cuba, on Prospect Hill. Far and away the best club, though the top floor live-music venue is superior to the 2nd floor standard dance club. Upstairs provides a little more room, a little less flash, and wonderfully varied but danceable live music. Cover ‚5-10.

GPO, Eglinton St. A student favorite during term. Monday night Sheight Night” gives you the chance to dress your sheightiest and dance to Abba’s greatest hits. Tu 70s night, W comedy club. Cover around ‚6.

Karma, Eyre Sq. This club welcomes those who dress to impress; come in sneakers and your night will be over very quickly. A great place to get down with other tourists. Opens Th-Su 11pm until late.
