And extremist fringe groups are less prominent than the division in civil society that sends Protestants and Catholics to separate neighborhoods, separate stores, separate pubs, and often separate schools, with separate, though similar, traditional songs and slang. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which granted Home Rule to Northern Ireland with the hope of resolving some of the region’s struggles, has been struggling itself. London briefly took the reins again in the summer of 2001, and both sides renewed their efforts to make their country as peaceful as it is beautiful. While everyday life in Northern Ireland may be divided, its landscape and society are for the most part quiet and peaceful.
