History of Salzburg

Salzburg, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria, is a city with a rich and colorful history. The city was founded in 1180 by Count Leopold III of Babenberg as a fortified town on a strategic location between the two powerful Austrian empires – the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. Salzburg’s growth continued under the rule of the Habsburgs, who built numerous palaces and gardens in the city. The city’s heyday came during the 18th century, when it was favored by both European royalty and American celebrities such as George Washington, who stayed in the Prince-Archbishop’s Palace. Today, Salzburg retains its attraction for tourists with its many attractions including its world-famous cathedral, several museums, and gardens.
