Tweeter Outlet Center
874 Commonwealth Ave. Boston;(617)738-4411
At the rear of Tweeter Etc.’s branch on the Boston University campus is a big room with shelves and shelves of demos, discontinued and refurbished stereo and video equipment at savings of 20% to 70% (!) off the retail prices.
You may, for example, find a Mitsubishi 50-inch projection TV, listed at $3,800, on sale for a paltry $1,999. Denon receivers start around $300, occasionally $200. And it’s not all high-end stuff; How about a Kenwood double cassette deck, marked down from $300 to $180, or a Yamaha CD player with a five-disc carousel at $100 off.
Tweeter offers the original, full manufacturer’s warranties on all merchandise. The store is open seven days a week, including weeknights til 9 P.M.
31 Holland St. Somerville; (617) 625-7707
This Davis Square shop buys, sells, trades, and repairs stereo and video equipment, as well as electric guitars and amps. Cassette decks by Technics and Pioneer were seen in the $65 to $75 range; a Kenwood receiver was also $75, and a Sony CD player was $90. Used VCRs start as low as $95, and turntables from $45.
A special note for collectors of old radios: Used Sound specializes in tubes and has a good stock of these hard-to-find items. All stereo equipment carries a 90-day warranty. Open Mondays through Saturdays.
