The emphasis of the Museums programming is on the contemporary expression of traditional motifs to create a living heritage, as opposed to an historical museum that preserves Jewish culture through collections of artifacts, documents, or memorabilia. The Museum organizes special exhibitions and hosts traveling exhibitions that explore Jewish art and culture with contemporary relevance. The Museum also hosts invitational programs in which Jewish and non Jewish artists are invited to create works based on Jewish themes. The Museum maintains a permanent collection of contemporary Judaica. The Museum is constructing a new facility in the historic Jessie Street Substation at the Yerba Buena Gardens arts center. The new facility, scheduled to open in 2001, will include areas for special exhibitions, workshops, lectures, films, performances and school programs.
