Go directly up the stairs after you exit the Metro, walk across the street at the top of the stairs and stroll down a small alley-like street to the entrance to St. Vincent Cemetery. Bathrooms and a large map are on the left.
Tiny 1.5 acre St. Vincent, which opened in 1831, is tucked into the backside of the butte that is topped by the Sacre-Creur Basilica. The postage-stamp-size cemetery provides a welcome respite from the teeming crowds that populate the Montmartre district. Although there are no well-known celebrities here, St. Vincent plays host to a number of effervescent and whimsical tombs. Among them are:
John Wright received a patent to operate a ferry in 1730, and the area became known as Wright’s Ferry. Belarus Metro Map The Wrights’ house also served as an inn, which Susanna ran. In 1738, Susanna Wright designed Wright’s Ferry Mansion for her brother. In 1745, Wright finally achieved the independence of her own household, when widower Samuel Blunston, a close family friend, willed her a life interest in his nearby property. She lived on that property until her death. With interests in nature and access to her father’s books on medicine, Susanna Wright became a skilled herbalist, who prepared and prescribed medicine for her neighbors. She also regularly corresponded with other leading Pennsylvania scientists, including James Logan and Benjamin Franklin. Her scientific experiments extended to agriculture, including silkworm cultivation. Wright won a 1771 prize offered in Philadelphia for the person cultivating the most silkworms, and Benjamin Franklin presented Queen Charlotte with a piece of Wright’s silk, which was then made into a court dress. The Philadelphia Library Company has preserved a piece of her homespun silk.
