600.000 acres. This is an extremely remote park, located some distance southwest of Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula, in the southwestern part of the state.
It’s accessible only by charter boat or plane, and visited by a very small number of people each year. There are no facilities. Weather here is often wet and severe in the summer.
The area has some volcanic mountains, including a 6-mile-wide caldera (collapsed volcano), a couple of lakes, and several rivers. Most notable among them is the Aniakchak River, a National Wild and Scenic River.
Activities: Backpacking and hiking are feasible, but there are no trails. Rafting is possible on the Aniakchak River. Fishing is also available in the park and preserve. Hunting is permitted only in the preserve.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed without restriction throughout the region, as are campfires. No permits are required.
