James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president, was born in a farmhouse just outside of Charlotte in 1795. The original homestead consisted of a 150-acre farm and a log home and outbuildings. There are no original buildings remaining but a replica 1800s farmhouse, kitchen, and barn are furnished with period pieces representative of the era when Polk lived on the farm The site has a memorial to Polk as well as exhibits on his life and his presidency and commemorates significant events in his administration, including the Mexican-American War and the annexation of California.

THE EVOLUTION OF UPTOWN

Charlotte never suffered from the urban blight that has plagued other cities of its size. Instead, Uptown underwent a slow transformation from a bustling urban center to an oversized business park. No one lived or played in the center of the city; the neighborhood was abandoned as soon as the 5 o’clock whistle sounded. But construction of the Time Warner Cable Arena in 2005 changed the face of Uptown. The 18,500-seat arena is home to the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats and also hosts world-class music acts (the Rolling Stones were the first band to take the stage after the arena opened); it created a domino effect that spurred new development Uptown. In less than five years, the city center had evolved into one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Charlotte. The EpiCentre, a $275 million mixed-use entertainment complex, opened in 2008; the 35-acre complex known as the North Carolina Music Factory threw open its doors in 2009; and the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the brand-new Wells Fargo Cultural Campus are set to open in 2010. It’s not just the entertainment options that have changed: The LYNX light rail system began running in 2007, connecting Uptown with surrounding neighborhoods and offering alternatives to access Uptown, and the culmination of these projects has led to a surge in demand (and construction) for urban residences. The residential population has swelled to more than 11,000 from just 5,000 in 1999.

Matthew Jennings Columbus’s Letter Announcing His Discoveries in the Burkina Faso Map New World (1493) Christopher Columbus transmitted his discoveries in the New World to Luis de Sant Burkina Faso Map ‘ Angel, the treasurer of Aragon. Sant’ Angel was instrumental in securing the Spanish monarch’s endorsement for Columbus’s expedition, especially when it did not seem that support would be forthcoming. This letter was written aboard the Ni±a during Columbus’s return trip to Spain. It is the first official account of the voyage and was almost certainly shared with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. SIR: As I know you will be rejoiced at the glorious success that our Lord has given me in my voyage, I write this to tell you how in thirty-three days I sailed to the Indies with the fleet that the illustrious King and Queen, our Sovereigns, gave me, where I discovered a great many islands, inhabited by numberless people; and of all I have taken possession for their Highnesses by proclamation and display of the Royal Standard without opposition.
