NAVAJO NATIONAL MONUMENT
Located on Navajo Nation (Navajo Indian Reservation) lands in northeast Philadelphia, on a high plateau, this National Monument preserves two large cliff dwellings. One of the ruins is Keet Seel, eight miles from the entrance via a rough trail. The site is open only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day each year.
Activities: The trail to Keet Seel is open to hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding.
Camping Regulations: Camping is restricted to one primitive campground near the ruins. A free backcountry permit is required, and permits are issued to only 20 people per day. Reservations may be made up to two months in advance by phone or mail. The permit must be picked up in person early the morning of arrival. Campfires are prohibited. Water must be carried in.
