For fine fashions (especially women’s), saunter down Fifth Avenue between 58th and 49th Streets stopping at Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel (on 57th Street), Gucci’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Lower down, there’s Lord and Taylor’s and Altman’s, and on 34th Street, Ohrbach’s, whose speciality is line-by-line copies of couturier designs. Gimbels, Macy’s perennial rival, has two Manhattan branches: one on Sixth Avenue and 33rd Street, the other uptown on East 86th Street.
Men’s clothing: most of the above stores have excellent men’s shops. But for the world’s largest men’s clothing store, go to Barney’s (Seventh Avenue and 17th Street). Special departments cater to short, tall and rotund customers.
