Strathcona Wilderness Centre
Location: Travel 16 km east of Sherwood Park on Baseline Road (Township Road 530), and turn south on Range Road 212.
Info: Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year-round. Extended weekend hours in February and March, and from Victoria Day to Labour Day weekend. The Information Centre is wheelchair accessible. Encompassing 223 hectares of parkland, the Strathcona Wilderness Centre offers year-round nature exploration on the shores of Bennett Lake. Stop at the information centre to ask about picnic sites and current trail conditions. The trails span 12 kilometres, including three kilometres of interpretive pathways. You can explore the spruce bog boardwalk or enjoy the nine-hole disc golf course. Bring your own disc or rent one on-site. Snowshoes and cross-country skis are available for rent in the winter. Cross-country ski lessons are available for children and adults at all levels.
Katie’s Crossing
Location: Just east of Sherwood Park, go east along Baseline Road and cross Range Road 222. Look for Katie’s Crossing on the right-hand side, at the junction of Range Road 221A and Baseline Roadbefore the train trestle.
Info: Open 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday to Sunday, from early April to the end of November. Groups of 5 or more should call ahead to ensure seating is available, and call about a week ahead if you would like a guided tour of all 10 train cars. Cash only. Limited wheelchair access. 780-922-7008.
Katie’s Crossing is a restaurant located in vintage railway cars. You can dine inside one of the railway cars or take your food to the outside deck or a picnic table during the summer months. Explore the train while your hobo bologna sandwich is prepared. One of the train cars has been made into a chapel, and another contains a collection of antiques, with some items for sale.
