ELDORADO NATIONAL FOREST CALIFORNIA

This attractive National Forest is situated in the High Sierra directly west and south of Lake Tahoe, in the north-central part of the state. Among the high mountains here is 9,983-foot Pyramid Peak. There are also canyons and a number of lakes and creeks.

Vegetation includes high meadows with wild-flowers and forests of lodgepole pine, whitebark fir, and hemlock, with some old-growth stands. Among the wildlife are mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, and fox.

Eldorado has two designated wilderness areas, consisting of the 63,470-acre Desolation Wilderness and a portion of the 105,165-acre Mokelumne Wilderness.

Activities: About 350 miles of trails are available for backpacking and hiking, including sections of the Pacific Crest Trail and the new Tahoe Rim Trail (see entries page 113). Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Some trails receive heavy use.

Most trails are open to horseback riding, and to mountain biking outside of wilderness areas. Cross-country skiing is possible on some trails during the winter. Fishing is available, as is hunting during the appropriate season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout most of the region, except where posted otherwise. A fire permit must be obtained in order to use a stove or build a campfire.

A wilderness permit is also required in order to camp in wilderness areas from May through September. Quotas are in effect. Advance reservations may be made for permits.
