LASSEN NATIONAL FOREST MAP CALIFORNIA
1,060,588 acres. This large National Forest surrounds Lassen National Park in northern California, encompassing mountains of both the northern Sierras and the southern Cascades, with some volcanic peaks and lava formations. Highest point is 8,677-foot Crater Peak.
There are also rugged canyons, caves, plateaus, foothills, meadows, lakes, and ponds, with forests of ponderosa and lodgepole pine, Douglas and red fir. Wildlife includes mule and black-tailed deer, antelope, black bear, mountain lion, and coyote.
Lassen National Forest has three designated wilderness areas: the 41,000-acre Ishi Wilderness, the 20,625-acre Caribou Wilderness, and the 16,335-acre Thousand Lakes Wilderness.
Activities: Backpacking and hiking are available on about 135 miles of trails, including a section of the Pacific Crest Trail (see entry page 113), and also the 30-mile Bizz Johnson Trail.
Difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous. Horseback riding is allowed on most trails. Fishing is possible alongside the lakes and streams. Hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout the National Forest, except where posted otherwise. Campsites should be away from meadows and at least 100 feet from trails and water sources.
A fire permit, available from ranger stations, is necessary in order to use a stove or make a campfire. Permits are not currently required for the wilderness areas.
