FORBES STATE FOREST
50,000 acres. Forbes State I Forest is made up of a number of tracts in the Laurel Ridge area of southwestern Pennsylvania. The highest point in the state, 3,213-foot Mount Davis, is located here as part of the 581-acre Mount Davis Natural Area.
Also of note are the 4,675-acre Quebec Run Wild Area and the 3,593-acre Roaring Run Natural Area. There are rock formations, streams with wa- terfalls, and mixed oak forest, with maple and tulip trees, plus mountain laurel and rhododendron. Wildlife includes deer, bear, and bobcat.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on a number of trails, including a section of the j Laurel Highlands Trail (see entry page 252), and some trails in the Quebec Run Wild Area. Crosscountry skiing is available here in winter. Fishing is another possibility, and hunting is permitted in I season.
I Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires ! are allowed in most regions of the forest, except I where otherwise prohibited. Campsites should be at least 100 feet from trails and 200 feet from roads. A permit must be obtained from the park office in order to camp for more than a single night at any location.
