DIXIE NATIONAL FOREST
Consisting of four units in south-central and southwest Utah, including lands next to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks, this is the largest National Forest in the state. Elevations range from under 4,000 feet to over 11,000 feet, with 11,322-foot Bluebell Knoll the highest point.
There are canyons with steep cliffs, colorful rock formations and pinnacles, plateaus and mesas, along with a number of lakes and streams. Forests are of fir and pine, plus pinyon and juniper. Elk, pronghorn antelope, mule deer, black bear, and mountain lion are among the wildlife.
Dixie National Forest has three designated wilderness areas: the 50,000-acre Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness, the 26,000-acre Box-Death Hollow Wilderness, and the 7,000-acre Ashdown Gorge Wilderness.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on some 640 miles of trails, including a section of the new Great Western Trail (see entry page 278). Difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous.
Horses are allowed on most trails, as are mountain bikes outside of wilderness areas. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available when
there’s adequate snow. Fishing is possible along lakes and streams, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout the National Forest, as are campfires, except near public use areas or where otherwise prohibited. No permits are necessary.
