PATMOS
Given that it has recently become a favorite destination of the rich and famous, and that it has also been declared a Sacred Island by ministerial decree, Patmos (pop. 25,000) has an interesting blend of visitors. The white houses of Hora and the majestic walls of the sprawling Monastery of St. John the Theologian are visible from anywhere on the island. (Dress modestly. Monastery open daily 8am-lpm; also Tu, Th, Su 4-6pm.) Buses from Skala, the port town, run to Hora (lOmin. 11 per day, ‚1); alternatively, take a taxi (‚3) or tackle the steep hike. The Apocalypsis Monastery, a complex of interconnected buildings between Skala and Hora, is built on the site where St. John stayed while on Patmos. Most visitors come to Patmos to see the Sacred Grotto of the Revelation, adjacent to the church of St. Anne, the cave where St. John dictated the Book of Revelation. (Dress modestly. Ferries arrive in Skala from: Kos (4hr. 2-3 per day, ‚9.70); Rhodes (8hr. daily, ‚11); Samos (6 per week, ‚6); and Thessaloniki (22hr. 1 per week, ‚37). The tourist office is opposite the dock. ( 22470 31 666. Open daily 9am- 9pm.) Domatia are offered by locals who meet the ferries; expect to pay ‚15- 20 for singles and ‚20-30 for doubles. To reach Stefanos Flower Camping at Meloi O, 1.5km northeast of Skala, follow the waterfront road as it wraps along the port.
