ELSEWHERE AND CAMPING

Budget lodgings are rare near the Chamartin train station, as is the case in most of the residential districts located away from the city center. Near the Madrid-Atocha train station are a handful of hostels, the closest of which are down Po. Santa Maria de la Cabeza. Tourist offices can provide info about the 13 campsites within 50km of Madrid. Similar info is in the Guia Oficial de Campings (official camping guide), a large book they’ll gladly let you peruse. FOOD

In Madrid, it’s not hard to fork it down without forking over too much. Most restaurants offer a menu del dm, which includes bread, one drink, and one choice from each of the day’s selection of appetizers, main courses, and desserts (‚7-9). Many small eateries line Caltes Echegaray, Bentura de la Vega, and Manuel Fernandez Gonzalez

in Huertas; Calle Agurrosa at Lavapies has some funky outdoor cafes, and there are good restaurants up the hill toward Huertas; Calle Fuencarral in Gran Via is lined with cheap eats. Bilbao, the area north of Glorieta de Bilbao, is the place to go for ethnically diverse culinary choices. Bars along Calle Hartzenbusch and Calle Cisneros offer cheap tapas. Keep in mind the following essential buzz words for quicker, cheaper madrileno fare: bocadiUo (a sandwich on a long, hard roll, ‚2-2.80); radon (a large tapa, served with bread ‚2-3.80); and empanada (a puff pastry with meat fillings, ‚1.30-2). Vegetarians should check out the Gvia del Ocio, which has a complete listing of Madrid’s vegetarian havens under the section Otras Cocinas, or the website www.mundovegetariano.com. For groceries, %Dia and Simago are the cheapest supermarket chains. More expensive are Mantequerias Leonesas, Expreso, and Jumbo.

Eli Inshala, C. Amnistia 10 (915 48 26 32). M: Opera. Eclectic menu filled with delicious Spanish, Mexican, Japanese, Italian, and Moroccan dishes. Weekday lunch menu ‚8. Dinner menu ‚8-‚15. Reservations strongly recommended for both lunch and dinner. Open M-Th noon-2pm, F-Sa until 3am. liArroceria Gala, C. Moratin 22 (914 29 25 62). Down the hill from C. Atocha on C. Moratin. The decor is as colorful and varied as the house paella (‚14). Reserve on weekends. Open daily l:30-5pm and 9-llpm.

BEl Estragon Vegetariano, PI. de la Paja 10 ( 913 65 89 82). M: La Latina. Perhaps the best medium-priced restaurant-of any kind-in Madrid, with vegetarian food that could convert even the most die-hard carnivores. Try the delicious menu (M-F ‚9; Sa-Su and evenings ‚18). Open daily l:30-4:30pm and 8pm-lam. AmExMCV. rworld, founded in 1725, serves filling Spanish dishes (‚7-25). Reservations recommended. Lunch daily l-4pm, dinner 8pm-midnight. Sevilla.
