Arhus, Denmark’s second largest city, lies on the E coast of Jutland in a wide bay of the Kattegat. It first appears in the records in 928 as the see of a bishop, and received its municipal charter in 1441. It is now the cultural and educational hub of Central Jutland, with a University founded in 1928. It is also an active industrial town (foodstuffs, machinery, textiles, etc.).
SIGHTS. The central feature ofthe inner city, which is enclosed by a semicircular peripheral boulevard (Ringgade), is Store Torvet (the Great Market). On the E side of this square, near the harbour, stands the Cathedral of St Clement, founded in 1201 but much altered and enlarged in later centuries, so that it now has the appearance of a late Gothic building. Features of the interior are the high altar, with a rich array of figures, by the Lubeck master Bernt Notke (1479; recently restored), the beautifully carved 16th c. pulpit by Mikkel van Groningen and the organ (1730). The vault paintings date from the 15th c. In front of the Cathedral is a monument to Christian X (1955). To the S is the Theatre (1900).
