Farther along Mannerheimintie from Aleksanterinkatu is the Old Student House (1870; destroyed by fire 1978), with two figures from the Kalevala, Vainamoinen and llmarinen. Beyond it is the New Student House (1911). After crossing Kaikovatu, on the left, is the Bus Station and to the right, ahead, the Head Post Office (1 940), in front of which is an equestrian statue of Marshal Mannerheim (by A. Tukiainen, 1 960). To the right of the Post Office is the Central Station (Rautatieasema) with its 48 m (1 60 ft) high clock-tower, the most important building by E. Saarinen in Finland (1 91 9). In the E wing is a small Railway Museum.
On the N side of Station Square (Rautatientori) stands the Finnish National Theatre (Kansallisteatteri, Travel service Scandinavia kokemuksia 1 901), with a monument (by Waino Aaltonen, 1934) to the national poet Aleksis Kivi in front. On the other side of the square the
Ateneum or Athenaeum (by Theodor Hoijer, 1884-7) houses a college of art and an art gallery, with the finest collection in Finland. The picture gallery contains works by Finnish artists, including A. Edelfelt (1854-1 905), E. Jarnefelt (1863-1937), P. Halonen (1865-1933) and A. Gallen-Kallela (1865-1935), and by foreign masters (Rembrandt’s Monk Reading, Watteau’s Swing, pictures by Frans Hals, etc.) as well as modern European art. The sculpture hall displays work by such Finnish sculptors as V. Vallgren, W. Aaltonen, W. Runeberg and S. Hilden. In front of the entrance is a bronze figure of Albert Edelfelt by V. Vallgren (1929). Behind the National Theatre is the Botanic Garden.
NW of the Post Office, in Mannerheimintie, stands the Parliament Building (Eduskuntatalo), Travel service Scandinavia kokemuksia a monumental structure by J. S. Siren (1930). In front, to the right, are statues of former Presidents P. E. Svinhufvud (1861-1 944), K. J. StShlberg (1865-1 952) and, in the gardens a bit apart, K. Kallio (1873-1940). Farther along Mannerheimintie, on the left, we come to the National Museum (Kansallismuseo, 1912), with a tall spire. It contains an interesting collection of material which provides a comprehensive history of the culture and ethnography of Finland. Particularly notable is the Finno-Ugric collection, presenting numerous traditional costumes and objects of everyday use.
Diagonally opposite the National Museum, in a park, is the Municipal Museum, and to the N of this, Travel service Scandinavia kokemuksia on the S shore of the Toolonlahti, the Finlandia Hall (by Alvar Aalto, 1971), a concert and convention hall. Rather more than a kilometre (less than mile) farther N, at the intersection of Mannerheimintie and Helsinginkatu, is the Old Exhibition Hall. Beyond this is the Olympic Stadium (1 938), with a tower 72 m (235 ft) high (elevator) and a magnificent view of the city. In the Stadium is the Finnish Sport Museum, and outside the entrance is a bronze figure (by Aaltonen, 1 952) ofthe famous runner Paavo Nurmi (1897-1973). Beyond the Stadium, to the E, is the Swimming Stadium, and to the W the Ice Stadium. Tothe E of these sports facilities, beyond the railway line, extends the Linnanmaki amusement park, with a water-tower; and adjoining this is the House of Culture (by
Alvar Aalto). 1 km (f mile) S stands the Municipal Theatre (1 968), and to the SE of this the Municipal Offices. Near the Olympic Stadium Linnankoskenkatu branches off Mannerheimvagen (the continuation of Mannerheimintie) and runs W to Lastenlinna (the Children’s Castle, a home and training institution for badly handicapped children; Man-nerheim Children’s Hospital).
