SHA HE GOLF CLUB SHENZHEN
This is another favourite with the locals. Most locals feel that visitors, especially Hong Kong visitors, lack resolve and dedication to their golf. Rightly or wrongly, they accuse them of dallying on the course and gossiping, thus holding everybody up. Shahe Golf Club resolves this by hurrying players up and paying a fine to them if their game takes more than four and a half hours.
Now we’re not great golfers. Golf courses have been known to hand out free helmets to other punters on our approach. But we do appreciate a good walk in nice surroundings and the art that goes into creating it. And Shahe is a masterpiece of this art.
The raw materials weren’t particularly promising, basically a flat mangrove swamp with the Sand River flowing through it into the shallow mud flats of Shenzhen Bay. Much of the present course is on land reclaimed from the Bay.
But when the course opened in 1996, it rapidly became clear that designer Gary Player had created a masterpiece. Against a background of the sea and the mountains of the New Territories he broke up the flat muddy rectangle with artificial hills, undulating lakes and specially sand traps. Shahe does after all mean Sand River. The result is very pleasant. Rolling hills, distant sea and mountains and a summer sea breeze combine to present an almost romantic experience as we punish the dimpled ball.
The Club has 27-holes and a 9-hole course for night golf under lights, a must in this hot and humid climate. And if like us you’re just too incompetent to be let loose in human company with a set of golf clubs, Gary Player also has a golf academy here, the largest in the world. The numbers start to get ridiculous at a certain stage. Suffice to say that there are no less than 160 driving positions at the academy.
Once again this is a favorite with the locals. It also has a solid group of local Korean members.
The club has a full clutch of western and Chinese restaurants, a sauna, a karaoke room and all the other things that the golfer likes to amuse himself with after he’s finished golfing.
