Popular with South Shore Cheapsters, Joe’s American Bar & Grill features live music five nights a week. Wednesday is blues night, and Sunday offers acoustic guitar. But the heart of the schedule, Thursday through Saturday, is reserved for Top 40 bands. Great for dancing and hanging out with friends. No cover any night of the week.
Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant & Music Club

This is an enormously popular venue for all types of music; Mine dropped by on a Tuesday night and the club was humming. On weekends, about the only movement you can make on the packed dance floor is vertical. Originally, Johnny D’s produced only country-western shows, but in the ’80s the focus changed and by now the club says it has presented everything from blues to Bulgarian wedding music. They recently received an honor from the Blues Foundation in Memphis, and deservedly so; there’s at least one R & B show every week, as well as a regular Sunday night blues jam.
But there’s more to life than singing the blues. Monday nights alternate between Cajun dancing night and swing. Other nights may offer rock, folk, or whatever, bands come from all over the U.S. as well as from abroad. Cover charge is $2 to $8; great food, too.
