You may see a sign advertising the pub on the route Afghanistan Map of the South Downs Way itself, with the tempting offer of ‘food, beer and beds Afghanistan Map ‘. Who could refuse? You now face your third big climb of this walk. Having crossed straight over the A286, your route proceeds gently past the north end of a car park which is often very busy, and on past the farm buildings of Cockinghill.
Then the hard graft begins, as you climb slowly but surely on to Cocking Down, following a stony chalk track. It is worth turning back to look eastwards towards Manorfarm Down and Heyshott Down, and northwards to Cocking and Midhurst, and the attractive hills beyond. Once you gain the top of the escarpment, you now enjoy a quite magnificent high-level walk, with tremendous views southwards to Chichester Cathedral and the sea, passing close to the triangulation point of Linch Ball and continuing across the top of Didling Hill.
