Amrhein’s Restaurant US Map & Phone & Address

80 West Broadway, South Boston; (617) 268-6189

This area of Southie isn’t really that far from downtown, yet it feels like another world a simpler time and place. Amrhein’s Restaurant is a big part of that. Operating since 1890, this Austrian pub in an Irish neighborhood has kept its old-world atmosphere. Its heritage embraces famous and near-famous politicians; they also claim to have Boston’s very first beer pump.

The food, meanwhile, will keep you full for another hundred years especially if you go for the specials. Mine requested roast pork tenderloin; a mound of slices in brown gravy, served with cooked vegetables and two warm rolls and butter, all for $5.45. There was enough for leftovers. Other early specials include chicken and veal parmigiana, with spaghetti, for $6.95; and a big chicken pot pie for $6.45.

Mondays through Wednesdays from 4 to 10 P.M. there are better bargains yet, with two-for-one specials such as chicken marsala and linguine, baked stuffed scallops with vegetables, and the house specialty, wiener schnitzel over noodles. Choose any two dinners for just $13.95!
