204 Massachusetts Ave. Arlington; (617) 646-4243
Despite its name, this is not a swap meet; it is a consignment dealer for anything and everything in home entertainment. People bring in items they want to sell; the store displays them. Profits are then split between the two.
The quality ranges from basic models to high-end brands. You can find TVs in all sizes, turntables, and even the records to spin on them (hundreds of titles, all $2-$3 apiece). A Sony CD player was seen recently for a mere $59; an Onkyo cassette deck, with automatic music search, for $39. You may even see reel-to-reel tape decks, tower speakers, and other audio buff stuff. Rebuilt VCRs at $60 are a steal and a specialty complete with a 100-day store warranty.
The store’s stated goal is to price each item at 25% to 40% of its original retail value. Everything on display is up and running for you to check out. They’ll even give you a free estimate on repairs to your own equipment a service for which many shops charge.
Audio/Video Exchange claims to be the only business in town offering all this under one roof. The hours are kinda funky: Tuesdays through Fridays from 5 to 7:30 P.M. and Saturdays from 11 to 3.
