In 1774, Wilkes returned to politics, being elected lord mayor of London. During the Country Revolution, Wilkes persisted in his radicalism and pushed for reform; however, his views changed as he grew older. In the 1790 election, the Middlesex voters decided that he was no longer radical enough to suit them, and he lost the election. With this, he retired from politics.
