CHIOS

Pine-speckled hills lend an untamed feel to the interior of Chios (pop. 50,000), which offers its visitors charming villages and hot, sandy shores. Pyrgi, 25km from Chios Town, is one of Greece’s most striking villages, with black-and- white geometric designs covering its buildings. Farther south lies Emborio beach, where beige cliffs accentuate the black stones and blue water below. Buses run from Chios Town to Pyrgi (4 per day, ‚2.20). Ferries go from Chios Town to: Mykonos (1 per week, ‚14); Rhodes (2 per week, ‚28); Samos (4hr. 2 per week, ‚11); and Tinos (2 per week, ‚15). To reach the tourist office, Kanari 18, turn off the waterfront onto Kanari and walk toward the plateia. ( 22710 44 344. Open May-Oct. M-F 7am-2:30pm and 6-10pm, Sa-Su 9am-2pm and 6-10pm; Nov.-Mar.
