MARICOPA COUNTY PARKS
Four sizable county parks surround the city of Phoenix: 26,337-acre White Tank Mountain Regional Park, 21,099-acre McDowell Mountain Regional Park, 19,200-acre Estrella Mountain Regional Park, and 14,382-acre Lake Pleasant Regional Park. The scenery here includes mountains up to 4,000 feet, canyons, desert, and 3,500-acre Lake Pleasant.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on over 50 miles of trails at McDowell Mountain Park, and more than 33 miles of trails at Estrella Mountain Park. Many trails are open to horseback riding. Hunting and fishing are permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed in backcountry areas of the four parks. A permit must be obtained. Campfires may only be built at designated sites. Very few people currently camp in the backcountry areas of these parks.
