Boudreaux’s showcases a different side of Southern cooking. The bayou-inspired menu has Louisiana favorites like gumbo, muffalettas (a traditional New Orleans sandwich: a large roll stuffed with salami, ham, provolone, and olive salad), jambalaya, crawfish, and oyster po’ boys (a submarine sandwich filled with deep-fried oysters and topped with lettuce, tomato, and Cajun mayonnaise). Several of the selections on the beer menu are direct from the Gulf Coast, including Dixie Lager, Dixie Blackened Voodoo, and Abita Turbo Dog. The restaurant sits on the corner of North Davidson and East 36th Streets in the heart of the NoDa arts district, making a table on the patio one of the most coveted spots in the neighborhood.

Settling in at one of the plastic tablecloth-topped tables at Dish feels a little like eating in the dining room of memaw’s farmhouse. The food is just like memaw (that’s grandma to you Northerners) used to make, too. It’s a true neighborhood eatery that serves up stick-to-your-ribs Southern favorites like fried green tomatoes, Cajun meatloaf and mashed potatoes, shrimp and grits, and grilled chicken livers. Southern Living magazine raved about the chicken and dumplings, which is the most popular item on the menu. Dish also has a bar tucked behind the main dining room. It’s a typical dive bar complete with cracked plastic chairs and blue smoke filling the air. Compared to the sweet dining room where pastel-colored plates line the walls, the bar feels more like a VA lounge. Skip it and stick with the Southern dishes instead.
