251-255 Cambridge St, Cambridge; (617) 492-7232 True to its name, this is your traditional Greek-American diner, located near the courthouse in East Cambridge. It’s busiest during the day, when locals stop in for lunch and chatter; beer and wine are available.
Dinner entrees are mostly around $6 and under, served with potatoes and vegetables. Many come with pita bread, but this is not pulled from some plastic bag: El Greco makes its own homemade bread. Hot from the oven, it’s thick, chewy, and yummy. Wrap it around souvlaki ($4.75), large chunks of beef in a creamy garlic sauce. It’s delightfully messy and big enough to take some home for later.
Check the chalkboard for wonderful daily specials. Homemade egg-lemon-chicken soup is an unusual and tasty concoction, for $2.50. Greek-Style Fish ($4.95) gives you flaky pieces of white fish, served
El Greco opens for breakfast from 6:30 A.M. (they sleep until 11 A.M. on Sundays), with some of the lowest prices around. Two eggs with home fries, toast, and bacon, ham, or sausage are just $1.75. Pancakes are $1.50. Of course, you can just get an order of pita bread. Mmmmm.
