That very modem building across the street from South Station hosts a regular series of free lunchtime concerts in its auditorium on the ground level. Ensembles from the area’s music schools are most often featured; concerts begin at 12:30 on Thursdays.

The start is signposted. At a fork keep right, to eventually come out on a tarred road. Turn right (Coach Road) and walk on past houses for c. 200m to where a sign, left, points to a gentle rising path (the Avenue) up to the A803. Patrick McCann was a popular provost of the town; there’s a plaque to him on the railings near the Mining Monument. And along a bit, a bust to another provost, John Jarvie, who has a square named after him. The mining monument was designed and constructed by pupils from the two local academies. In 1739, the Colzium estate factor was responsible for introducing the potato to Scotland. Robert Graham began experimenting with potatoes in his garden near Banton and planted out crops above Kilsyth. An astute businessman, he bought up farms right across Scotland and planted potatoes.
