This pair of shops can be found along the same block where the Haymarket takes place each weekend. Only these guys are open all week long. Fresh chicken and beef are the specialties at Haymarket’s Famous; here, you can get whole chickens for 790 a pound. & you can buy in large quantities, you’ll save even more. A ten-pound bag of chicken drumsticks is $5.90; or, you can get three pounds of ground beef for $4. TTie surroundings are no-frills, and so are the burly men behind the counter, but hey, this is the Filene’s Basement of meats. It’s open Mondays through Saturdays, 8 a m. to 6 PM.
Just along the block is Puritan Beef a few steps up, for a change, rather than down. Again, bargain prices, especially in bulk: Turkey wings by the bag, or unsliced bacon. Here’s where you can get that pork, such as spareribs for $1.69 a pound; also, strip sirloin for $3.89 a pound. Also a good place for ethnic specialties like goat meat oxtail, and pig’s feet. Open daily from 7 a m. to 5 P.M. Fridays and Saturdays 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
