HOGE VELUWE NATIONAL PARK
The impressive Hoge Veluwe National Park (HO-geh VEY-loo-wuh) is a 13,565-acre preserve of woods, heath, dunes, red deer, and wild boars. (59 16 27; www.hogeveluwe.nl. Deep in the park, the HiRijksmuseum Kroller-Miiller has troves of van Goghs from the Kroller-Muller family’s outstanding collection, as well as key works by Giacometti, Gris, Mondrian, Picasso, and Seurat. The museum’s striking sculpture garden, one of the largest in Europe, has exceptional works by Bourdelle, Rodin, and Serra. (www.kmm.nl. Arnhem (15km from the park) is a good base for exploration; bus #107 comes from Arnhem to the park’s northwestern Otterlo entrance. Contact the park or either tourist office for more information. To get to the Stayokay Hostel , Diepenbrocklaan 27, take bus #3 from the station to Rijnstate Hospital; as you face the hospital turn right, then left on Catte-poelseweg. About 150m ahead, turn right up the brick steps, and at the top turn right. Rooms are exceptionally clean, service is friendly, and the reading room and bar make for a peaceful entree into the park.
