The city hostel is the only budget option in Luxembourg City. Hotels are cheaper near the train station than in the city center, but are often a splurge nonetheless.
Youth Hostel (HI), 2 r. du Fort Olisy (22 19 20; luxembourg@youthhostels.lu). Take bus #9 and ask to get off at the hostel stop; head under the bridge and turn right down the steep path. Bella Napoli, 4 r. de Strasbourg (48 46 29). Simple rooms with hardwood floors and full bath. Breakfast included. Reception daily 8am-midnight. Singles ‚38; doubles ‚45; triples ‚60. O
Hotel Schintgen, 6 r. Notre Dame ( 22 28 44; schintgn@p.lu). One of the cheapest hotels in the Old Center. Breakfast included. Reception daily 7am-llpm. Singles ‚55-67; doubles ‚85; triples ‚90.
Hotel-Restaurant de 1’Avenue, 43 ave. de la Liberte (40 68 12; hotelav@pt.lu). Small, but nice rooms with cute bathrooms. Singles ‚47; doubles ‚70; triples ‚83. Camping: Kockelscheuer (47 18 15), 7km outside Luxembourg City. Take bus #5 from the station to Kockelscheuer-Camping. Showers included. Open Easter-Oct. ‚3.50 per person, ‚4 per site. O
FOOD
Although the area around the pi. d’Armes teems with a strange mix of fast-food joints and upscale restaurants, there are affordable and appealing alternatives. Stock up on groceries at Supermarche Boon, in Galerie Kons across from the train station. (Open M-F 8am-8pm, Sa 8am-6pm, Su 8am-noon.)
ill Restaurant-Cafe Chiggeri, 15 r. du Nord (22 82 36). Serves divine French food in a fun and funky atmosphere. Wine list offers an amazing 2200 varieties. Free Internet access for all customers, but just 1 computer. Entrees ‚11-14; more expensive restaurant upstairs. Open M-Th 8am-lam, F-Sa 8am-3am, Su lOam-lam.
Restaurant Bacchus, 32 r. du Marche-aux-Herbes (47 13 97), down the street from the Grand Ducal palace. Excellent pizza and pasta (‚7.40-12) in a homey environment. Reservations recommended 7-10pm. Open Su and Tu-Sa noon-lOpm.
Au Table du Pain, 37 av. de la Liberte (29 56 63), on the way to the train station. Serves up soups, salads (‚8-10), sandwiches (‚4-8), and baked goods on wooden tables in a country-home atmosphere. Open M-F 7am-7pm, Sa 8am-4pm.
Le Beaujoiais, 2a r. des Capucins ( 47 45 12), next to the Municipal Tourist Office. Pasta (from ‚8) and pizza at reasonable prices (‚6.50-11). Sit in velvet booths or people watch outside on the pi. d’Armes. Open daily ll:30am-ll:30pm. Daiwelskichen, 4 Grand Rue (22 15 08). Although pricey, an authentic place for South American food and margaritas. Meals ‚12-20. Reservations recommended. Open M noon-3pm, Tu-F noon-3pm and 7-1 lpm, Sa 7-1 lpm. O
Schumacher, 18 av. de la Porte-Neuve. Popular spot to grab a sandwich (from ‚2) and go. Open M-F 7am-6pm, Sa 7am-5pm. O
