IKEA has its South China headquarters here. Other European retailers are British home building and renovation store B&Q, and French sports chain Decathlon. The German store Metro is also here.
Above Decathlon is a large Sundan store, which sells electrical appliances, household goods and a large range of electronics. Yes, we sometimes have to be restrained in Sundan. Faced with so many choices in consumer electronics at ridiculously low prices, the spirit may be willing but the flesh is exceeding weak.
Metro is one of the new wave European food outlets blithely blurring the line between retail and wholesale. You have to be a member to shop there but there’s no drama involved in becoming one. Just show your passport and within five minutes you’ll have your photo ID and you’ll be ready to rock. Metro offers excellent meat, good fruit and vegetables including herbs and good value wine. Sundan also has a very good wine range in the kitchen section. Decathlon offers clothing for all types of sporting and outdoor activities, with sizes up to US Large. Sadly Ikea has faithfully transported its service concept to South China. It’s faster to go to Hong Kong Ikea than wait in the queues here.
To go by taxi ask for Ouzhou Cheng European City or Yi JiaIkea. The taxi stand is under the Ikea store.
