1334 Cambridge St, Cambridge; (617) 354-0260 Rumor has it this Inman Square hangout was around before the Pilgrims arrived. The S & S is still one of the toughest tables in town for weekend brunch; even though the place sprawls with several large rooms, it’s frequently crowded with smiling diners.
Half-pound hamburgers come with a variety of toppings, plus fries and cole slaw. Mine chowed down on a Continental, made with sauteed mushrooms and Swiss cheese, which (like all burgers) is $5.95. Chicken breast sandwiches are served on toasted focaccia bread nowadays. These too are $5.95, as is a croissant filled with smoked turkey, tuna, or roast beef.
Lunch and dinner entrees come from land and sea; they include a ten-ounce sirloin steak ($8.95), broiled salmon ($9.95), and barbecued chicken ($8.95). All are accompanied by two side dishes of your choice. Lunch specials on Mine’s visit included grilled vegetarian pizza or fet-tucini carbonara, both $4.95. Finish off with desserts like triple chocolate truffle cake, mud pie, or fruit tart (all $2.50).
Breakfast-all-day fans will love the anytime brunch food, like huge omelettes, pancakes with sausage, and the obligatory bagels and lox.
The S & S opens at 7 A.M. Mondays through Saturdays (Sundays at 8); they serve until 11 P.M. Sundays through Tuesdays, til midnight the rest of the week. But remember, if you want those bagels with your Sunday Globe, show up early.
