South Luangwa National Park Safari

Every journey to South Luangwa starts at Lusaka Airport. Domestic airline ProFlight operates flights from the Zambian capital to the National Park. This plane will fly us to South Luangwa National Park. Aircraft type: Jetstream 4100. The Jetstream 4100 seats 29 passengers. Seats are arranged in a 2-1 layout. The sun sets as we fly over the African bush. It’s dark by the time we reach Mfuwe Airport, the getaway town to South Luangwa. Landing at Mfuwe Airport. Mfuwe is one of four international airports in Zambia. Wife has just one runway. It’s a very small but surprisingly modern bush airport. The staff of Time + Tide Kakuli awaits us at the airport. It’s a 2 hour drive from Mfuwe airport to the camp in an open jeep. The first hour of the drive is on a public road.

The other hour takes place within South Luangwa National Park and is a game drive. We are treated to an awesome sight on our way to Kakuli. A large pride of lions is located on the road, deep inside the national park. The lion is the king of the African savannah. There’s one problem though: the lions are blocking the road and we cannot pass them. But then, an amazing event takes place. The lions escort us all the way to the lodge … Speaking of a royal welcome!. This is the entrance to Time + Tide Kakuli Lodge. Due to the lion traffic jam, we arrive with a one hour delay (my best delay ever!).

Time + Tide Kakuli is an intimate bush cam It features one main pavilion (an elevated chitenge) and five tented. This is the lodge’s main open-air pavilion. It houses a bar, a relaxation lounge, and an adjacent dining room. The main pavilion has a wooden deck It overlooks the Luangwa River and a permanent waterhole. Time + Tide Kakuli is a ‘no frills’ lodge. It enjoys a riverside location in a game-rich part of South Luangwa National Park. South Luangwa is a world-renowned wildlife haven. Concentrations of game in South Luangwa are amongst the most intense in Africa.

All suites have the same layout and design. There’s also one family suite, accommodating two adults and two children. I stayed in this suite during my visit. The lodge’s five suites were freshly redesigned in 2018. The suite’s front is open during the day (closed at night) It offers spectacular views of the Luangwa River and its wildlife. The ensuite bathroom has an open wall. It is separated from the bedroom by a curtain and thatched wall.

A small self-service buffet offers bread, cereals, yoghurt, juices and fresh fruit salad. Hot dishes are served as well.

Lunch is served buffet-style at the main pavilion The food always comprises a selection of delicious salads and hot dishes. The Time + Tide staff has a wonderful surprise for us.
