Architects have cleverly balanced sense of place with design wow factor. Made from local stone, wood and thatch, the eight suites are unmistakably African but come with glass-walled bedrooms and bathrooms that open out into the riverine forest (watch out for passing elephants). Another highlight is the food – you won’t eat better anywhere else in the bush. The meals cleverly blend European and African flavours and you dine by candlelight either at the riverside boma or at a bush braai.
You don’t have to move very far to see wildlife, but be sure to take one (or both) of the twice-daily game drives. The reserve is home to the Big Five, so there’s a high chance of spotting leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino. Game walks are a must, getting you up close with nature for a real walk on the wild side.
