DAW CROCKETT NATIONAL FOREST

This National Forest in east Texas has forests of hardwoods and pine, boggy areas, many creeks, some lakes, and includes the Neches River. There’s one designated wilderness area, the 3,000-acre Big Slough Wilderness.

Activities: The longest trail here for hiking and backpacking is the 20-mile 4-C National Recreation Trail. This trail is closed to horses, but horseback riding is allowed on the Pine Creek Horse Trail, which forms several loops.

Canoeing is possible on some of the lakes, and also along the Big Slough Canoe Trail, which circles around the Big Slough Wilderness and includes a section of the Neches River. Canoes may be rented. Winter and spring are the best times for canoeing here. Fishing is another option. Hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are allowed throughout the National Forest, except near public recreation areas or where posted otherwise. No permits are required. Camping is limited to designated sites during deer hunting season.
