THRIFT SHOPS US

Like commercialized yard sales, thrift shops offer you a crazy hodgepodge of stuff clothing, housewares, and the ever-popular bric-a-brac (what is that, anyway?) Remember, the descriptions below are a very loose guide; quality, selection and prices can vary widely over different visits. Any of these places can toss a surprise your way for just a few bucks . .. ya never know.

Amvets Thrift Store

80 Brighton Ave. Allston; (617) 562-0720

180 Oak St. Brockton; (508)580-2973

One of the nicest thrifts in the Boston area, Amvets is big, bright, and bulging with very low-priced clothing. Long racks of suits, pants, shirts, sweaters, coats, dresses and more for women, men and kids all seem to be priced between $2 and $10. Much of the merchandise is well-worn, but there’s enough clothing in good condition to make scouring the racks worth your while.

There is also a good amount of furniture, mostly chairs and tables as well as books, TVs and radios, etc. Amvets is open seven days a week; every Monday, senior citizens get 25% off purchases of clothing. Hours are daily from 9 am. to 9 P.M. Sundays from 12-6.
