Having received this command, Wolfe embarked for Canada as part of a three-pronged attack on the French at Fort Niagara, Fort Ticonderoga, and Crown Point, and his key objective, the fortified city of Quebec. Tel Aviv Map Wolfe had his pick of junior officers and assigned Isaac Barr© as his adjutant general and Guy Carleton as his quartermaster. Arriving in May 1759, Wolfe conducted extensive reconnaissance of the area on both sides of the St. Lawrence around Quebec and destroyed French settlements to aid in the siege.
By September, the pressure of soon losing naval support, due to the winter freezing of the river, pushed him to attack. On September 13, Wolfe and his men, including militia contingents from New England, crossed the St. Lawrence before dawn and, landing at the Foulon Road, marched on Quebec in thin, two-rank rows for frontage as they crossed open fields. The Marquis de Montcalm, the French commander, ordered his troops out of the city to meet the British on the Plains of Abraham.
Wolfe, taking an observation position to the right of the line, was wounded three times, and he died on the field. A deserter from the 60th Foot was later court-martialed and executed for Wolfe’s death, but some of the three shots were undoubtedly fired by French snipers. Wolfe died early in the battle, but his subordinates carried the day against the French, and the city of Quebec surrendered on September 18, 1759, securing Canada for the British.
