Drinking wine in church takes on a whole new meaning here. The wine bar is housed in the former Dilworth Methodist Episcopal Church South. The church was built in 1895 and retains all of its original architectural details. The wine list is as impressive as the space, with 200 wines by the glass and an additional 300 bottles in the private cellar. Bonterra was awarded the AAA Found Diamond Award of Excellence and Wine Spectator chose it as one of the country’s Hot New Wine Bars.

It’s not hard to find wine in NoDa: It’s served at all of the neighborhood restaurants, and flows freely during gallery crawls. Dolce Vita has the requisite wine bar staples: Bordeaux-colored walls, cozy couches, and low lighting, but the owners have worked hard to avoid the too-cool-for-school wine-bar cliche. Wine is the main focus at Dolce Vita, which means the selection is more robust than anywhere else in the neighborhood. It’s also the only place in NoDa that hosts tastings and special wine-related events. Here, wine is approachable. Not sure what to order? Ask questions: The staff are knowledgeable and happy to help. Have a favorite? There are dozens of different wines served here so chances are, it’s on the menu. (Stop in for Wino Wednesdays for half price wines by the glass.) The crowd is different, too. It’s a place where the young and hip go to hang outand there just happens to be wine. On Gallery Crawl nights, it’s impossibly packed but worth the wait.
