New York’s Best Bridges
Water-laced New York has 65 bridges to hold it together, 14 that connect the isle of Manhattan with the surrounding area.
The 1,595-foot Brooklyn Bridge created a sensation when it opened in 1883. But it was plagued by misfortune from the start. Its engineer, John Roebling, died in the early phases of the project as a result of an accident, and his son Washington, who carried on the work, was paralyzed by the bends contracted in the course of the job. And they were not the only casualties. Nonetheless the bridge with its wire webbing is a beautiful success and a favourite subject for photographers and Sunday painters.
The double-decker George Washington Bridge spans the Hudson between Manhattan and New Jersey. Designed by O. H. Ammann, its graceful lines show up best at night when the bridge is illuminated.
