A LIFE TRAVEL PROFILE

Business travel aside, a life travel profile for a middle-class American reflects discretionary time available, money, age, and desire for change. As children, people go where their parents go. As teenagers, middle- and upper-class Americans begin to strike out on their own off to college, summer work in a far-away resort, perhaps a back-packing trip to Europe. Then comes marriage and the career that limits the travel urge. Middle age approaches and there are trips abroad. (Business travel peaks for the breadwinners.)

When the children leave home, the affluent parents see travel as a major pleasure, always a new place to go, probably traveling independently. Group travel is next in the travel profile. Lastly comes cruising, the easiest, least demanding, and safest means of travel with a bountiful table, almost continuous entertainment, a closed pleasure environment.
