BLM LANDS IN COLORADOColorado has over eight million acres of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) or public domain lands, mainly in the western and west-central part of the state. Included are numerous canyons, 80 miles of the Arkansas River, and 50 miles of the Colorado River. There are a number of Wilderness Study Areas on these lands, areas which have been recommended for wilderness designation.
Brochures or other printed literature are available by request for only a few of the many tracts. Public facilities are generally minimal or non-existent, and access to some of the areas is difficult.
Activities: There are very few established trails on BLM lands. Hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding are allowed, but most travel must be cross-country. Nordic skiing is often possible during winter.
Whitewater rafting, kayaking, and some canoeing are available on several rivers, including the Arkansas and Colorado Rivers. Fishing is possible, with hunting permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is generally allowed on BLM lands, except where posted otherwise. Campsites should be at least 100 feet from streams and lakes. Campfires are allowed, but stoves are recommended. Permits are not required for most areas.
