TIADAGHTON STATE FOREST
204,600 acres. This state forest consists of several tracts of land on both sides of the Susquehanna River, in north-central Pennsylvania. Included here are rock formations and other rough terrain, ridges with vistas, valleys, and areas of plateau.
Tiadaghton is forested with oak, black cherry, beech, and some virgin hemlock. There are also swamps and large creeks. Wildlife includes deer, bear, bobcat, fox, and wild turkey.
In the forest are three designated Wild Areas: the 7,498-acre McIntyre Wild Area, the 6,962-acre Wolf Run Wild Area, and the 3,727-acre Algerine Wild Area.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are available on some 200 miles of trails. Included are the circular 42-mile Black Forest Trail, the 27-mile Old Loggers Path, and 14 miles of the 59-mile Loy-alsock Trail (see entry page 253).
Cross-country skiing is possible on over 40 miles of designated trails. Pine Creek is suitable for white-water canoeing. Fishing is available along the creeks, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout most of the forest, as are small campfires, except where restricted or posted otherwise. Campsites should be at least 100 feet from trails and 200 feet from roads.
Permits are not required as long as the maximum stay at each campsite is one night. A permit must be obtained if one wishes to remain for two or more nights at a single campsite.
